The capture of the American-born drug kingpin was a fluke

The Mexican society once again were deceived by the lies of the federal police authorities and by the Secretary of Public Security, Genaro García Luna, which has a questionable reputation and is well known that the armed forces don’t trust him, has made that the society to think that the capture of the most powerful and bloodthirsty drug trafficker, Edgar Valdez Villareal “La Barbie” was the result of a 14 months thorough intelligence investigation that consisted of agents, satellites and undercover cops. However, for the misfortune of the authorities, this generated a lot of suspiciousness within the local press and began to question, how can it be possible that during the arrest there wasn’t any shootout? How can it be, that the most wanted drug kingpin surrender so easily without even giving a fight? And above all, this happened just two days before president Calderon gave his fourth State of the Union Speech.

The versions of events given by Facundo Rosas, General Commissioner of the Federal Police and Genaro Garcia Luna in several media interviews, shows inconsistencies and contradictions and even differ with the Federal Police report were it contains the versions of the federal police agents involved in the arrest of “La Barbie”.

According to this police report that was revealed by the press on Wednesday. The federal police agents that were patrolling on a highway in the State of Mexico were overcome, around 18:30 local time on August 30th, “recklessly” by three vehicles —a Chevrolet Cruze, a Chevrolet Malibu and a Ford Focus— traveling at high speed. They went after them and ordered them through the loud speaker of the patrol to pull over, once the vehicles pulled over, the first to stepped out of the vehicle was a white man. At that moment the agents did not know who was the man that they had just arrested.

Later, without saying when, the federal agents asked him to give them his personal information, and he replied without hesitating, that he was Edgar Valdez Villareal, and that his nicknames were “La Barbie”, “El Güero” and “El Tigrillo”. Then he confessed that he is a drug trafficker and briefly told them his criminal history; that he traded illegally between one and two tons of cocaine per month, which is brought from Colombia, and explained what were their routes. He assured that he was responsible of the kidnapping and killing members of the rival groups; detailed his relationship with the late drug kingpin Arturo Beltran Leyva, and his participation in a drug lord summit in 2007 in the city of Cuernvaca, Mexico.

In my viewpoint , there must be something else behind this odd and ridiculous capture of this powerful drug kingpin. Its hard to believe that a drug kingpin would just turn himself in, just like that.

What angered me, is not the fact of how Edgar Valdez Villareal was caught , but the fact that the authorities once again made up a nonsense story, just to make us believe that they are doing their job and giving results. President Calderon constantly has urged everyone to support the fight against drug cartels, but the question that I raise, how can we believe in a war based on lies?
